Robbie Eddles – an incredibly special and courageous 17 year old from Durban, has just relapsed for the third time. He was first diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia when he was 5 years old and fought so bravely for so long, then relapsed at 10 and now again at 17.

The SABMR is registered as a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO). For donations of more than R100 per annum a Section 18A tax certificate will be issued upon request.

Become a donor
Step 1:
Click here and complete the qualifying questions. You will receive an email confirming registration as well as the SABMR’s application form and exclusion criteria. Please complete the application form and return it to donors@sabmr.co.za .
Step 2:
Once your application has been processed, you will receive an email asking you to go to a prearranged site which has the SABMR’s swab kits. The locations that the SABMR’s swabs are kept at include Pathcare, Vermaak & Partners, SANBS, WCBS and Intercare. If you do not stay near one of these locations a kit will be couriered to you.
Step 3:
Your swabs will be sent away to the lab for testing and these results will be placed on the SABMR’s database. This process can take anywhere between 4 – 8 weeks.
Step 4:
If you are a potential match for a patient (locally or internationally), you will be contacted by an SABMR staff member and asked to go for further testing to verify your results. Please note: a potential donor may be on the SABMR’s database for five months or more than ten years before being contacted, it is important to keep your contact details up to date.
Step 5:
If you have been verified as a match for a patient, you will be contacted by the SABMR and a medical examination and peripheral blood stem cell collection will be arranged. All costs involved are covered by the SABMR, all we want from you the donor is your time to give someone such as Robbie Eddles, a second chance at life.
