Saving Lives Through
the Power of Connection
About SABMR
Every year, hundreds of South Africans with blood diseases like Leukemia face a harsh truth: Their best chance at survival is a bone marrow stem cell transplant.
For about 30% of patients, that hope comes from within their own family – a sibling or relative whose marrow is a match. But for the other 70%, their lifeline depends on a stranger, someone out there who might say, “Yes, I’ll help.”
That’s where we come in.
Today, the SABMR doesn’t just search locally; we scour the globe, partnering with international registries and holding ourselves to the highest standards. We’re proud members of the World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA), but our roots are right here in Cape Town, where this mission began.
Our goal? Simple: Save lives, together.
- We spread the word (because most people don’t know they could be the one match someone desperately needs)²
- We grow our registry (every new donor = another chance at life)²
- We embrace technology (to make the process faster, smarter, and more hopeful)²
- We build connections (because this isn’t just science – it’s people helping people).
Right now, our registry includes over 78,000 donors. And because we’re part of a global network, we have access to
43 million potential donors worldwide. That’s 43 million reasons to believe in a future where no patient is left waiting.
As a non-profit and Public Benefit Organisation, we’re governed by a team of experts who wake up every day fighting for
this cause. But here’s the truth: This isn’t just their mission – it’s ours. Every new donor who joins us? That’s another life changed. Another story rewritten.
And that’s something we can all be part of.

Meeting Global Standards to Save Lives
The South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) is proudly accredited by the World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA), the international gold standard for stem cell donor registries. This recognition confirms our commitment.
What We Do
“ We at the SABMR specialise in finding life-saving bone marrow matches for patients with no family donors – a complex search with 1 in 100,000 odds. To bridge this gap, we maintain our local donor registry, test new volunteers, and collaborate with 76 international registries (accessing 43+ million donors).
Today, 75% of matches for our patients come from abroad. When we find a match, we coordinate the entire process – from global stem cell transport to transplant aftercare. Every day, we’re driven by one goal: turning rare matches into second
chances for South African patients.“
