At the heart of the South African Bone Marrow Registry’s lifesaving work is our dedicated Board of Directors – a team of medical experts, business leaders, and governance professionals committed to ethical, world-class stem cell matching. Guided by WMDA standards, our Board ensures every donor search meets rigorous global benchmarks while expanding access to treatment for South African patients. Their strategic leadership fuels our mission to turn hope into healing.

Dr Bukhosi Mtukushe
DR. Bukhosi Mtukushe (LLB, UP) holds a Diploma in Anaesthesia (CMSA, UCT) and brings unique dual expertise to the SABMR Board. His background in public hospital obstetrics/anaesthesia and emerging legal career strengthens patient-centered governance and policy development for life-saving transplants.

Dr Charlotte Ingram
Dr. Charlotte Ingram, SABMR’s leader, was previously Medical Director of SANBS. A haematology and haematopathology specialist (MMed/FCPath, Wits), her expertise includes HLA lab management and stem cell cryopreservation, combining academic rigor with transfusion medicine excellence.

Mrs Jane Ward
An SABMR staff member since 2013, Jane is registered with the HPCSA with special in Chemical Pathology. She began her career in private pathology sector and is currently also the Head of Donor Services at the SABMR.

Ms Juthika Hariram
Attorney Juthika Hariram brings High Court litigation experience and an MBA’s strategic perspective to the SABMR Board. As both a legal expert and unrelated stem cell donor, she offers unique insight into governance and patient advocacy.
Mr David Cohen
David Cohen is a chartered accountant with his own practice specialising in business consulting, accounting and taxation. Prior to this, he served as director of a large audit practice. His experience covers a large spectrum of the commercial and industrial business world.

Dr Fareed Omar
Dr. Fareed Omar (MBChB, UCT), Haematologist and SABMR Medical Director, pioneers stem cell transplant access in Africa. Leads donor matching, JACIE/WMDA compliance, and cost-saving protocols. Academic contributor and advocate for equitable care.

Dr Karin van den Berg
Dr. Karin, SANBS Medical Director, serves on SABMR’s Board with expertise in transfusion medicine and global blood safety. Her research focuses on HIV and blood donation (PhD candidate). She previously led SANBS’ Translational Research and contributes to international blood society initiatives.

Mr Stuart Land
Mr Stuart is a qualified Actuary and Certified Director with 27 years’ insurance expertise, specializing in finance and board governance. His deep industry knowledge supports SABMR’s strategic oversight as he serves on multiple boards, ensuring robust financial stewardship for life-saving stem cell transplants.

Ms Matlhogonolo Mogapi
Matlhogonolo is a Chartered Accountant (SAICA, 2012) and Registered Auditor with 10+ years’ experience. After training at a Big Four firm, she held roles at Absa Capital and STANLIB. As MD of Bagaka Group, she drives strategy, impact investing, and sustainability. Holds a BAccSci (Wits), CTA, and MBA (GIBS).

Dr Lucille Singh
Dr. Lucille Singh (MBChB, UP 2005) is a Specialist Physician (Wits 2012) and Clinical Haematologist (2014). At JACIE-accredited ACT (Netcare Pretoria East), she performs stem cell transplants. She serves as SACHS Secretary and SAOC clinical reviewer. In private practice since 2016.

Dr Pieter de Witt
Dr. Pieter de Witt is a clinical hematologist at Netcare Kuils River (Cape Town). MBChB (Stellenbosch, 2003), MMedSc (Critical Care, UFS), and certified in Clinical Haematology (UCT, 2015). Passionate about stem cell transplantation, he co-founded a private practice with Dr. Koornhof.

Dr Thandeka Nkabi
UCT-trained Dr. Nkabi (MMed, Dip Pall Care, Toronto BMT-certified) pioneers paediatric transplants in SA state hospitals. Her work on haploidentical BMT and immune recovery (SickKids research) targets high-relapse cancers and sickle cell disease in resource-limited settings.
